As a new designer, one of the hardest things for me is coming up with products that attract the masses. And being that I run an online shop, I can reach the masses very easily, so I have to make sure that what I design and sell is suitable for large numbers of people.
I recently attended the Great Halloween Lantern Parade and Festival in Baltimore, MD, where I had a small table set up with a few other vendors. It is an annual festival where families and young children come to make paper lanterns, eat delicious food from different food trucks, and listen to live music (not to mention an awesome beer garden!) At this point in my entrepreneurial journey, any opportunity that arises for me to promote my business I jump at. But of course, the problem came up... What do I sell?!
My best seller right now is the Monogrammed Keychain, but unfortunately selling custom products in person has proven to be quite difficult. I just couldn't wrap my head around any products that would relate to potential festival goers. But then I thought, beer garden, and the ideas just started flowing.
I didn't want to offer too much, so I kept it simple: a few types of glassware with just a few different designs. And the only design I could think of that would relate to all of the people at the festival: Baltimore.
I started thinking about Baltimore--any teams, commonly related icons, anything. Finally I came up with a design that I just fell in love with. I thought of the Baltimore Orioles and the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately I can't reproduce their logos because of licensing, but I could use their colors! The team colors brought everything together: orange and black with purple and black. It just hit me.
I am in love with these designs, and hope to get them copyrighted! So to all you copycats out there... I've got my eye on you!
